About Roblox

What is Roblox?

Roblox helps power the imaginations of people around the world. As the world’s largest social platform for play, over 48 million players come to Roblox every month to create adventures, play games, roleplay, and learn with friends. We call it the “Imagination Platform” and believe everyone should have the right to play on it. That is why Roblox is freely available on all modern smartphones, tablets, desktops, Xbox One, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.

Roblox is a user-generated massively multiplayer online social gaming platform developed and published by the Roblox Corporation and released in 2006.

In the game, players are able to create their own virtual worlds and design their own games within the platform. Games on Roblox can be designed using a sandbox edition of the programming language Lua. Their in-game currency, Robux, can be rewarded to users and developers, or bought, and which in turn can be converted to cash through the Developer Exchange program. The game is designed to be family-friendly, with the ability of running on a wide variety of devices and platforms, including PC, Mac, Android, iOS, Xbox, and Oculus.

As of 2017, Roblox has over 500,000 game creators designing games, and 30 million active monthly players, who have logged more than 300 million hours of game play

In Roblox games, players explore 3-D worlds. Activities in the game world include exploring, crafting items, resource gathering, minigames, and combat.

Players can customize their virtual characters with various hats, head shapes, body shapes, clothing, and gear. Players may create their own articles of clothing. However, selling player-created articles of clothing and collectible items require Builders Club, but non-premium players may still create T-shirts, which are decals attached to the front of a player’s torso. Players can collect and trade items, especially limited edition collector items.

Social interaction

Players can add other people they meet in the game to their friends list. Since 2011, this can be done while playing.[11][12] On February 4, 2015, a new update to replace the Friends and Best Friends system, named Friends and Followers, was introduced.[13] This allows more personal game play if wanted. This update allows a maximum of 200 friends and infinite followers. Players also have the option to join community groups.[14] After joining, players can then advertise their group, participate in group relations, and set their primary group.[15][16][17]

Is Roblox educational?

There is a well-respected theory named “Constructionism” first posed by Seymour Papert of MIT Media Lab which holds that kids learn best when they are in the active roles of designer and builder, and this learning is accelerated when they assume these roles in a public forum. We support this theory.

We’ve observed that many of our members become deeply engaged with building complex structures and solving difficult problems when they know that the fruits of their labor will be seen and critiqued by others. Our platform provides a free development engine that allows players to create anything from simple drag-and-drop building experiences to complex multiplayer games. Millions of kids have used our tools to imagine what it’s like to become an overnight retail tycoon, compete as a professional racecar driver, solve a murder mystery, or simply build a dream home and hang out with friends. The level of creativity our players exhibit, along with the amount of time and care they spend building, never fails to astonish us.

What does Roblox do to protect my kids’ safety and privacy?

Roblox is a UGC platform that allows players to imagine, create, and play together in a family-friendly environment. This means we take kids’ safety and privacy very seriously.

We are committed to fully complying with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to ensure the privacy of our users age 12 and under and prevent them from sharing personal info via chat messages or in-game. Although users age 13 and older can adjust more account settings and have an expanded vocabulary list, Roblox employs a filtering system and moderation team to help keep players safe and restrict them from sharing personally identifiable information.

On 3/2/17, we added additional features that will further enhance our child safety initiatives:

  1. Parental controls that will enable parents to shut-off chat capability.
  2. Age visibility so that parents can easily determine that the settings for their kids are age appropriate.
  3. More stringent chat controls for under 13s restricting a greater range of words.
  4. Expansion of our moderation team for more aggressive deletion of games and content with behavior we will not tolerate.
  5. Further enhancement of our guidelines for our developer community in terms of content and experiences that are not allowed in their games.

We also allow parents to enable a setting on their child’s account that will allow them to only access a curated list of age-appropriate games for those under 13. This feature can be adjusted from within the Security tab under “Account Restrictions” in the Account Settings page.

Our moderation team is also online around the clock reviewing abuse reports. Players can report inappropriate chat messages or content by using our Report Abuse system, which is located throughout the site and in-game. In addition to reporting any rule violations, players can also completely block others from chatting or chatting with them in-game or on the website.
